Retford's Schools and the Property Market

Published: 15/10/2020 By Richard Bennett

School catchment areas are an often overlooked driver of the property market. Having a brilliant school nearby can benefit more than just parents seeking the best for their child; they can also help push local property prices up in the good times and protect the value of your home during the bad times.

We are extremely lucky to have numerous high-quality schools in and around Retford (we boast 6 Primary and 2 Secondary Schools, listed below).

Secondary

The Elizabethan Academy - Hallcroft Road, Retford, Nottinghamshire, DN22 7PY - 01777 713700
The Elizabethan High School was first created in September 1979, following a reorganisation of the secondary schools in Retford. At this time the former Hallcroft Girls' secondary modern school on West Furlong became the new school's Lower Site and the Retford Girls' High School became the school's Upper Site, on Queen Street. Whilst split across two sites, years 7 and 8 were taught at the Lower Site and years 9 through 13 at the Upper Site.
To facilitate this arrangement, staff travelled between the sites during the school day, although the students remained on a single site.

A project in 2007 to replace the separate school sites resulted in a purpose built building, not far from the former Lower Site. This new building replaced the split site arrangement with a single site. The school became an academy in April 2012, and was renamed The Elizabethan Academy.

Retford Oaks Academy - Babworth Road, Retford, Nottinghamshire, DN22 7NJ - 01777 861618
The school was established in 2003 with the amalgamation of two of the schools in Retford, one of which was already an amalgamation of a former establishment. HRH The Duke of Kent formally opened the school on its new site in October 2008. The two schools that merged were King Edward VI Grammar School & Ordsall Hall Comprehensive School.

King Edward VI Grammar School
King Edward VI Grammar school was opened on London Road in 1857. In 1979, King Edward VI Grammar School, and Sir Frederick Milner's School were merged into King Edward VI Comprehensive School. By January 1998, it was now known simply as the King Edward VI School and in 2003, the school was formally replaced by the new Retford Oaks Academy opened in 2003. The school stood empty for a number of years after closure but was eventually sold for redevelopment.

Sir Frederick Milner Secondary School
The former Sir Frederick Milner Secondary School was an all-male secondary modern school and was on Pennington Walk.  Sir Frederick Milner was the town's MP in 1921. In 1979, the school was merged with King Edward VI Grammar school as mentioned above, being just 2 streets away and site of the school still to this day remains empty, the buildings having been demolished.

Ordsall Hall Comprehensive School
Established in 1958, the school was situated on Ordsall Road. HRH The Duke of Edinburgh visited the school in 1968. In 2003 it merged with the King Edward VI Grammar School to become Retford Oaks High School. Following its closure, the school buildings and the Old Hall were demolished and the site is now housing, named Old Hall Drive.

Finding Local Schools
A quick Google search will usually tell you all you need to know when it comes to finding local schools. Calling the school you’re interested in will obviously give you an even greater insight into your chances of getting a place and the requirements needed. Speaking to other parents in the local area will help you decide if the school is a good fit for your child, and even local social media groups can be a great source of information when it comes to an area’s educational facilities.
